Oom Martiens will receive a state funeral on Friday

BANN braaing some meat during a holiday in February last year.

MARTIENS Bann, the EMPD officer who was shot and killed in Edleen on Saturday, will be buried on Friday.

A memorial service will also be held for him on Thursday afternoon at the civic centre 2pm.

The inspector, who served the metro police department for 30 years, will be laid to rest during a state funeral arranged by Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department.

The funeral service will be held at Wynand Marais Community Hall at 11am. The funeral procession will then go to Mooifontein Cemetery, where he will be buried on top of his first wife. Refreshments will be served back at the community hall.

Bann died while trying to help his neighbours during an armed robbery and attempted hijacking at their Flamboyant Street home, but was shot in the stomach and gave in to his wounds a short while later.

At the time of his death, he was stationed within the Edleen Precinct.

Wynand Marais Community Hall is siutated at the corner of Olienhout and Houtkapper streets in Birchleigh.
