WATCH: Cell phone thief caught on camera at Norkem liquor store

A man pretending to ask for information at Checkers Liquor Norkem Mall was caught on CCTV stealing a cellphone from the counter on October 17.

Mpho Modika, the owner of the cellphone, works at the store as a security guard.

“I was charging my phone on the counter at work and when I went to check for it, it was gone,” said Modika.

The alleged male suspect, who appears to be with a female accomplice, walked into the store at 7.30pm. They went straight to the counter and appeared to be asking the cashier about products behind the counter.

The female accomplice distracted the cashier as the male suspect slowly pulled the phone towards him and took it out of the charger.

“I think they saw the phone from outside because they went straight to where it was,” said Modika. Immediately after the male took the phone, he and his accomplice left the store.

“When I noticed my phone was missing, I went to check the CCTV footage where I saw the man and his accomplice taking my phone out of the charger and walking out of the store with it,” concluded Modiko.

A case has been opened with the Norkem Park SAPS.
