Eight schools took part in the first fund-raising Sir Pierre Alumni soccer tournament at the weekend.
The team of Norkem Park High School won the trophy after beating Benoni High School 4-0 in the final.
Other schools that took part were Sir Pierre Van Ryneveld High School, HTS Rhodesfield, Masiqakaze (Tembisa), Dawnview, Tertia King and Charlotte Maxeke.
The alumni would like to thank each and every person who made the event possible, with special mention to organisers Carol Driver, Miguel Gomes, Mr Gravetown and ex-Sir pupil Clare Appleyard for taking the pictures.
Some key sponsorships from local businesses were much appreciated, including CMS for providing security, EMIT Reversing Time, Zinto Marketing Group, Fick It Up Events, Timbercity Kempton Park, Buco Kempton Park, Garbie for all the bins provided, Kids Co Entertainment and all the food vendors.
This will be an annual event with 2019 being bigger and better with more sporting events and sponsors on board.
The Sir Pierre Alumni NGO has been established as a result of ex-learners seeing the school in a run-down state and in desperate need of repair.
The alumni plan to embark on various fund-raising initiatives, such as this tournament, to restore or repair the infrastructure and bring Sir Pierre van Ryneveld High School into the 21st century.
Miguel Gomes, the founder of the NGO and ex-learner of Sir Pierre, said: “This school has a great and proud history that we want to preserve and build on. At this stage, it needs considerable investment to revamp and repair the facilities.”
Key areas of focus include adequate ablution facilities, roof repairs, painting, structural damages, new desks and chairs, to name but a few.
