Ink your Thoughts: Happy #YouthDay

This day, June 16, is sort of engraved in most of us because when we hear the words Youth Day, we often automatically think of June 16, 1976.

This is unlike other public holidays whereby we know the name but often fail to pin it to the actual date.

I know this is not the case for all of us but let us be honest, if someone were to ask when Freedom Day is, most of us would be like; ‘uhm…isn’t it somewhere in March or April’?

I honestly don’t know why it is the case and I certainly won’t try to figure it out, well, at least not today.

Today, I want to focus on Youth Day, obviously, but more on the day being more meaningful to you. But, before we get to that, I took the opportunity to jump on the ‘Youth Day wagon’ and gave birth to my blog ‘Ink Your Thoughts’.

This is officially my first piece in Ink Your Thoughts and I wanted to ink down what I have allowed this day to mean to me. On this day, I choose to embrace all that I am liberated to do today because of June 16, 1976.

We certainly can’t and shouldn’t repeat what transpired on that day, so why not embrace and appreciate all the good that the day has afforded us?

I know for some this is just another day or it has lost its meaning to you but how about we change gears and shift it towards something significant?

Don’t let what was fought, sacrificed and died for 42 years ago, be in vain. This is not an age, gender, race or even religion factor but more about unity. The unity that was evident in the 1976 students who jointly fought for what they collectively felt was wrong.

I know it might not be easy to remain positive with some of the negative things happening around us but let us join hands and give this day great significance.

I know the focus is on the youth but let’s also shine light on those who might not fall in the youth age bracket (16-35); emancipate the youthfulness in you for the better and do something meaningful all in the name of embracing Youth Day.

Choose to do good, choose to be and remain young at heart and remember to choose to embrace Youth Day.
