Mother’s Day ended with a bang as a factory in Sebenza went up in flames on Sunday.

An overview scene inspection was conducted and found that at least three separate structures on the premises had burnt.

Ekurhuleni Disaster and Emergency Management Services (DEMS) spokesperson William Ntladi said firefighters swiftly responded to the scene just after 9.30pm to face the roaring inferno.

Ntladi said the three main structures suffered massive damage from the blaze which resulted in a roof collapsing.

“By 9.58pm, the first fire engine from Kempton Park Fire Station reported on scene and initiated firefighting interventions. Backup from Edenvale, Bedfordview and all other neighbouring fire stations within the district responded as the factory was engulfed in flames,” explained Ntladi.

The cause of the fire is undetermined and still under investigation. (Photograph: Kevin Walker)

Ntladi pointed out that active offensive firefighting was engaged and by 10.30pm the same evening, all the flames were contained and prevented from spreading.

“The fire was declared extinguished around 1am on Monday. Damping down commenced until all hot spots were cooled off.

“No casualties or fatalities were accounted for on scene. The cause of the fire is undetermined and still under investigation by fire safety officers in conjunction with other relevant stakeholders.”
