Young Gertjie loses his battle following leg amputation

Gert Roets (23), the young Wolwe first rugby team player, has died today (Saturday) following a senseless attack a week ago.

Condolences for his family and friends are pouring in on social media.

Earlier today, at 1pm, the u-21 team of Kempton Wolwe Rugby Club dedicated their game against the Blue Bulls Academy team (Tuks 2) at Barnard Stadium to their fellow player by wearing hand-written wrist bands with Gertjie’s name on it.

The news about the death of the former Jeugland learner has been shared on social media after the match.

Soutie Matipa wrote: ” Lots of love to my brother Gertjie.. RIP my boi. Lord I know you have a plan and there is a reason for it. But it’s a painful plan..! My condolence to his family…! Only love Mr Roets.”

Gertjie, as he was known, was shot in Edleen a week ago while walking home with a friend. The bullet went through his hip, damaging the main artery. In an attempt to save his life, his left leg was amputated in Tembisa Hospital on Friday.

Charlene Bronkhorst wrote: “Middag Almal, Dis met ‘n baie swaar hart dat ons die nuus met julle moet deel. Ons Liefdevolle vriend Gertjie is by ons Hemelse Vader. Ons vra dat almal die familie ‘n tydjie sal gee uit respek. Ons almal kan ons Vader dank vir die geleende tyd wat hy Gertjie aan ons gegee het. Ons dank ons Vader om Gertjie te verlos van sy pyn. Dankie dat hy saam met U aan die regterhand van God sit vandag. Amen.”
