An alleged hijacker was wounded in the upper body by the metro police when he jumped from the moving hijacked vehicle on the R24 on Thursday.

His three accomplices were also arrested when they abandoned their vehicle near Barbara Road. The hijacked Quantum’s driver, who was kidnapped by the suspects, escaped unscathed.

Chief Supt Wilfred Kgasago, Ekurhuleni Metro Police spokesperson, said the Toyota Quantum was hijacked at around midday in Isando.

“The hijackers were travelling in a red Kia with four occupants. Information received revealed the driver of the hijacked vehicle was with one of the four accomplices in the Quantum after the hijacking,” Kgasago said.

The metro police sighted the hijacked Quantum on the R24 westbound near the Barbara Road turn-off, followed by a red Kia sedan with three occupants. The  POPs Unit members switched on their blue lights and sounded sirens to stop the two vehicles.

The two vehicles ignored the metro police and accelerated in an attempt to get away. A shoot-out ensued and a hijacker in the Quantum was wounded after jumping out of the moving vehicle, trying to escape on foot, Kgasago added.

An ambulance was summoned for the injured suspect and a case was registered at Bedfordview Police Station.

Other members of the POPs Unit pursued the red Kia. The three occupants abandoned it and tried to evade arrest by fleeing on foot. All three were apprehended in an open veld off Barbara Road next to an Engen garage.

They were detained at Kempton Park Police Station and the two vehicles taken to the SAPS pound facility at Van Ryn Deep in Benoni.

All the arrested suspects, aged between 24 and 36,  were charged with hijacking of a motor vehicle and attempted murder.
