VIDEO: Man plunges into hole caused by burst pipe

The mess left at a Monument Road property.

A man fell into a small sinkhole caused by a burst water pipe at a business on Monument Road in the early hours of Thursday morning.

As Robert McGill was trying to find out where the water was coming from, the paving caved in, leaving a deep hole.

The pipe burst around 1am and the owners of the business were alerted by Alpha Security.

When they arrived at the property everything was already under water. To make matters worse, no-one from the metro could assist to shut down the water as no emergency team was on duty. They were advised help would only be available at 8am.

According to ward councillor Jaco Terblanche the area will be without water until around 2pm today. Glen Marais and parts of Aston Manor will be affected.

Terblanche believes the pipe burst could have been caused as a result of repairs done on Monument Road at the Concourse Crescent intersection the previous day, which also left residents without water for 24 hours.

“If the air in the pipes is not properly cleared, it could result in further burst pipes,” he said.

Express is currently on the scene and more information will follow.
