Ekurhuleni scoop awards for promising 100 000 houses

Ekurhuleni head of department for Human Settlements Bongani Molefe accepts the Best Municipality Award from Matilda Gasela, HoD for the Gauteng Human Settlement Department.

EKURHULENI has been conferred as the best municipality of 2017 as it was being recognised for putting measures in place to ensure that 100 000 houses will be handed over to residents in the metro within the next five years.

The metro was shining alongside other Gauteng municipalities at the Govern Mbeki Human Settlement Award ceremony at Birchwood Hotel in Boksburg where member of executive council Paul Mashatile was honouring various municipalities and metros for their respective strides.

The City of Ekurhuleni continued to bag awards and certificates for its excellence in categories of Best Alone RDP and Best Social Housing. These are government-issued houses which houses many families across South Africa.

Part of the award ceremony was to recognise municipalities’ service delivery on housing, which will then help the Department of Gauteng’s Housing to increase its turnaround time for housing services.

Ekurhuleni was also awarded in other categories such as Best Informal Settlement upgrade of Chris Hani proper in Daveyton; Best Integrated Residential Development Project (IRDP) in Clayville Extension 45; Best Social Housing Project in Germiston Fire Station; Best Established Youth Contractor in Etwatwa Ext 34 and Best Finance Linked Individual Subsidy Project in Clayville Ext 45.

The City will also be a part of the national competition that will be held on November 9 at the Gallager Estate Convention Centre. The event will be hosted by the National Minister of Human Settlement Lindiwe Sisulu.
