Chef puts Kempton Park on the map

Kabelo Molosiwa from Protea Hotels by Marriott OR Tambo Airport is putting Kempton Park on the map.

KEMPTON Park residents flew the local flag high to represent locals at the Unilever Food Solutions Chef of the Year Mystery Basket Cook-off finals on September 6.

Kabelo Molosiwa (24) made it to the finals in the junior category where fellow juniors were required to create recipes for a starter, main course and dessert using Unilever Food Solutions products.

The youngster who resides and cooks at Protea Hotel on Marriott OR Tambo Airport, is proud of his achievement because to get to the national finals he won regional competitions and proved he has significant cooking skills.

Molosiwa said he started cooking at the age of 11 after discovering his love for working with food and cooking in middle school. He used to watch cooking TV shows and would want to replicate and practise what he saw but could never get it right.

“I never gave up. I started reading whatever I could find that was culinary related and that’s when life started getting more interesting for me. Working with new ingredients, trying out different techniques and making use of different cooking tools opened my mind to the world of culinary arts. When I was young, I used to make homemade pizza for my school lunch box – I was the envy of all my peers” said Molosiwa.

The local chef believes what makes his food unique is that he likes to play with savoury and sweet flavours to create unique tastes and sensations. He said his favourite meal is dumplings and stew.

“The one person who really knows me best in my family and who has supported me in my journey to become a chef is my cousin, Kakez Molosiwa. She knew how passionate I was when it came to cooking and she advised me to pursue hospitality.

Molosiwa said his career goals are to study further and develop his skill. The only advice he can give aspiring chefs is that they need to work smart and work harder.

“Next year, I want to study pastry. I think I might end up specialising in pastry as I have a deep love for baking. I love my job and have an insatiable desire to learn more,” Molosiwa concluded.
