Cash-in-transit van could have been followed from Phumulani Mall

The cash-in-transit van blown up near Tembisa.

It is believed the brazen cash-in-transit robbers who struck on Monday night, followed the G4S vehicle from Phumulani Mall in Tembisa.

Hi-Risk Unit spokesperson Gareth Pahl said not so long ago another cash-in-transit vehicle was robbed on the shopping mall’s premises. This time at least 15 men followed the vehicle to the R21 where they brought it to a standstill.

“We do not know how much money was in the vehicle but I know it was a lot. The suspects used explosives to blow open the van. Fortunately there were no injuries as the two men who were transporting the cash cooperated,” said Pahl.

Pahl said the vehicles used to follow the cash-in-transit vehicle included three BMWs, a silver Ford Ranger, Porsche and white VW Amarok.

Different policing units were deployed to the scene to help with investigations.
