HOERSKOOL teachers who led by example and won a rugby tournament, were crowned Rugby Sevens’ champions in Zambia.

Keith Goosen and Macro Albert who are both part of the school’s rugby coaching team, have demonstrated to their learners that hard work, discipline and dedication yield desired results.

Goosen and Albert qualified to be a part of the Golden Lions Rugby Sevens’ provincial team that went to compete in Zambia and smashed Nkwazi in the finals to win the Mufulira sevens international tournament.

Proud Hoerskool Birchleigh teachers led school rugby team by example and were crowned champions in Zambia.

The South African team impressed the hosts when they beat the Zambian police sponsored side to take the prize money of ZMK 10 000 on August 5.

Goosen (24) from Esther Park is a Grade Nine mathematics teacher who knows teachers at the very same school at which he passed mathematics during his high school days. He said the experience was something he will always cherish because he was shown so much love by the Zambians who enjoyed having South Africans in the tournament.

“This is also a good thing because we get to lead the school’s rugby team by example. We put the school’s name on the map. I enjoyed every moment of the competition and interacting with people who couldn’t stop asking us for pictures. They also asked about the South African rugby landscape,” said Goosen.

Albert (28) from Norkem Park is a Grade Eight to Grade 12 Life Orientation and Physical Training teacher who is also the Golden Lions Sevens’ captain. “It’s always good to play against other teams from other countries because you learn about different cultures. The competition is also good for the school’s rugby development as the learners will listen to us more when they know we lead by example. Our victory can be a source of inspiration to them.

The tournament was played on August 5 and August 6 and offered the local teachers a chance to obtain gold medals which in turn inspire the learners to work hard to win every game no matter where the game is played.
