WATCH: Edleen dad and son caught up in attempted heist

THE resident and his son were caught in the middle of the attempted heist that took place on July 29 where a Fidelity truck was bombed three times and shot several times.

An Edleen father hid behind a car while taking a video of the daring attempted hijacking of a cash-in-transit vehicle on Saturday morning.

What was supposed to be a normal Saturday morning for him turned into a nightmare as he also damaged his car trying to avoid cars reversing away from the scene.

The Edleen resident, who wanted to remain anonymous, was in his car with his teenage son when they came across the attempted heist on Modderfontein Road.

“It was about 8.45am and I was taking my son to work in Randburg. We were driving along Zuurfontein Road and when we approached the off-ramp towards Modderfontein Road, we saw a guy standing in the middle of the road re-directing the traffic,” the father explained.

The father and son were caught in the middle of the attempted heist.

“We continued to drive on. On the left-hand side was a black Polo. Suddenly the cars stopped and started reversing, including the car in front of me. Trying to avoid it, I swerved to the left and smashed into the Polo.”

The father checked if his son was okay and then got out of the car to check the two passengers in the Polo. They were also okay.

“Just then, we heard the first blast go off. The time was about 8.46am because that was when I took out my cellphone and started recording.”

The father, his son and the passengers from the Polo all stood behind one of the cars while he took the video.

A few moments later the second blast went off and a white van, which was going towards the scene, started reversing up the slipway.

Two more blasts went off and after a few moments and the group decided to run across the road.

“As we ran across the road, we heard gunshots as if they were shooting at us. But one thing I remember is that they were all very calm. You could literally go up to them and ask for a lighter and they could have probably given you one,” the father recalled.
