About 1 500 people attended the event to bid Steenkamp farewell with flags and a musical tribute by the pipe band from Benoni High School. Many members of the community participated and assisted on the day to make it a great success.

“Thank you to the staff of Aston Manor Primary School, the governing body, parents, children and the community for their thoughts. I hope everyone continues to support and assist the school and the children,” said Steenkamp.

“Our mission statement says, success will be determined by attitude and commitment and we live by these two Cs: choices and consequences. Make good choices, be kind, be helpful and be respectful of one another.”

The school would like to thank residents of Kempton Park and surrounding areas – as well as people from Australia, New Zealand, America and many other parts of the world – for all their kind words and participation during this event.

Laura Dawson has been appointed as acting principal.
