UPDATE: The R21 has been re-opened

THE R21 has finally been re-opened after it had been closed all day on Friday after an accident.

Traffic SA tweeted the news a few minutes ago, adding that traffic was still heavy but flowing again.

According to Traffic SA engineers decided to cut the power lines obstructing the R21 following an early morning accident.

The highway between Olifantsfontein Road and Nellmapius Drive had been closed all day on Friday in both directions.

About an hour ago, Traffic SA had tweeted “Road opening is imminent”.

Traffic had been a nightmare this morning and again this afternoon. Motorists said they spent up to three hours on the road to reach their destinations via alternative routes.

This caused a ripple effect with these routes, including the R25 and R23, being congested too.

The truck driver is in a stable condition in hospital.
