City of Ekurhuleni makes four critical senior appointments

Former deputy chief of police in charge of logistics, Gen Isaac Mapiyeye, is now chief of police.

In an effort to step up service delivery, the City of Ekurhuleni has filled three important management positions.

Gugu Pride Malaza-Duda has been appointed as chief financial officer (CFO) of the metro, while the new chief operations officer (COO) will be Leseba Mojapelo.

These two candidates have successfully met the requirements for the two positions and possess corporate experience required to steer the organisation to deliver on the social contract of the people, Themba Gadebe, metro spokesperson, said in a statement issued on Thursday.

Among her qualifications, Malaza-Duda boasts a Chartered Accountant (CA) qualification with SAICA. She has a wealth of experience cutting across private and public institutions. She has been at the helm of finances in institutions such as the SABC and FNB (internet and telephone banking).

Her role as VP: strategy and risk integration for Africa at Anglo Gold Ashanti is expected to contribute immensely to the prudent and sound management of Ekurhuleni’s public purse.

With her 14 years experience as a CA, coupled with 17 years of financial management and accounting experience, as well as her experience in formulating and implementing global strategies – both operational and financial – the City of Ekurhuleni is satisfied she is the best candidate for the position of CFO, Gadebe said.

The special advisor to the minister of transport, Lesiba Mojapelo, joins the City of Ekurhuleni as the COO. Mojapelo is not new to the City of Ekurhuleni.  He brings with him the institutional memory and flair in capital budget spending, required to move service delivery speedily.

Mojapele served Ekurhuleni in various capacities, including as acting executive director (HOD): infrastructure services, general manager (HOD): 2010 and special projects director: roads and stormwater, among others.

He holds a masters degree in technologeae (transport engineering) and master of business administration (MBA).

Ekurhuleni has also appointed Tumelo Kganane as chief information officer. Kganane holds a B Com Informatics (Hons) and brings a wealth of experience from the City of Johannesburg.

He served the City of Johannesburg as the divisional head where, among many important tasks, he supervised the roll out of free wi-fi, the smart city strategy and the intelligence command Centre. These are key attributes required as the City of Ekurhuleni evolves into a smart and developmental city.

Another important appointment for the community safety of Ekurhuleni residents is that of the chief of police.

Former deputy chief of police in charge of logistics, Gen Isaac Mapiyeye, is now chief of police.

Mapiyeye boasts 31 years experience in policing. He has acquired a B Tech degree in traffic safety management from the Technikon Pretoria and holds a public administration qualification from Regenesys.

He has served Ekurhuleni with distinction in many capacities, including as acting director: special services, municipal courts: coordinator, acting director: technical and logistics.

“His experience will ensure continuity and stability in the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department,” Gadebe said.

The appointments are with effect from May 2.
