A wild shootout between police and fleeing armed airport robbers in Isando on Thursday night lead to the death of one suspected criminal while another was seriously wounded.

It is believed more than 40 shots were fired at the officers during the chase in the vicinity of Barbara Road.

According to Brig Vishnu Naidoo, national police spokesman, police received information about robbers following people from OR Tambo Airport with the intention of robbing them around 7pm. Officers spotted a suspicious black BMW with four occupants and ordered the driver to stop. The four men immediately opened fire on the police.

Naidoo said during the chase one suspect jumped out of the moving BMW and fled. It is suspected that another suspect was wounded but he also managed to escape.

When the BMW finally came to a standstill, police found the body of one suspect inside the car. Also in the car was another man who was seriously wounded. He is in a critical condition in hospital.

Naidoo said the BMW had been hijacked somewhere. Three firearms were recovered at the scene.
