A young girl of about eight had to be airlifted to hospital on Tuesday evening after being critically injured in an accident at the intersection of Atlas Road and Geldenhuys Street in Bonaero Park.

Emer-G-Med paramedics responded to the scene of the accident just after 6pm. On arrival paramedics found a car had been T-boned by a bakkie at high speed.

The mother and daughter in the car were left seriously injured, with the child being in a critical condition.

Paramedics immediately began stabilising the child using multiple advanced life support interventions and putting the child on a ventilator, while the Netcare 911 dedicated trauma air response team was called in to assist.

Once stabilised, the child was airlifted by the Netcare1 aeromedical helicopter to a specialist trauma hospital south of Johannesburg.

The mother, who sustained serious injuries, was transported to hospital by ambulance.

Local authorities were on the scene to investigate further.
